Fort Rodolfo R.I.P. 2009-2010

This is a notice I got this afternoon from our property's Interim General Manager

'Residents
I have seen your notice for the party with bands, on the web site that you are planning tomorrow, Saturday, 31, 2010. This party is against the governing documents and thus you cannot hold this party. The police will be called if any band or people show up for your party.

Please be advised that you have been warned.

and this is the e-mail I recieved from our Property Manager:

'Just received complaint from HOA for a party and noise if they add a fine it will be deducted from your security deposit'

Im sorry to everyone who was looking forward to our last Fort Rodolfo shows. We all knew it was going to end but not like this. It would be selfish of me to host these shows because this may affect my roommate's security deposit refund, I hope you understand.

This is pretty upsetting however, THANK YOU for coming out to the shows we've set up and thank you for your canned food donations. Rest assured I will make sure they will be donated to the Santa Ana Food Not Bombs. It was a blast and couldn't have been without YOU. I will let you all know when I find a new space to host shows again after I move, keep your ears to the ground for the zine too. Once again thank you and Im sure I'll continue seeing all of you at other shows.

Fort Rodolfo: Not Small Enough. Show II.

Everytime we have shows at our pad, the shows get more and more wild. Fun times were sure to be had when I saw all these wonderful faces pull up in front of my house. Also, any band that tours with a cooler filled with ice and beer and toss around a volleyball by all means know fun.

Despite the fact that only nine people showed up for the show(Integrity AND Gehenna played the same night apparently, shit) we had a wild night of rock n' roll.

Satie is former members of Growing Pains/Cunyet Arkin and a current member of Maladie. Really heavy, really fast. Listen to the them right... now.

This is Maladie, no not Malady. These guys are better.

I have a bit of a history with these individuals. Let me say this about the Tijuana kids I know: They are very kind, well organized with hosting and promoting shows and fests and also have a tight knit community of friends I could only wish to be more involved in and when it comes to making music they have created some of the most cathartic and genuine bands I have been lucky enough to witness first hand. So for me, setting up this show and knowing that these great friends of mine would be playing gave me that typical sense of pride of 'giving back to the community.' With that said, please support: Maladie, Satie and anything on Nuestra Lengua Records. I love you all so much. p.s. This was also the record release show for the Maladie/Drowning With Our Anchors 10" split, record of the year? I think so.

We Were Skeletons are from Lancaster, PA. I was a introduced to them by my friend Omar who had me listen to their Summers demo. Since then, every release they've put out gets better especially with the new full length that was put out by Top Shelf Records just in time for their first US tour. These fine cats remind me of a young Off Minor with no signs of lacking experience playing live. Check out the newest LP. Did I mention Will Killingsworth did the recording?

When I graduated high school my friend asked me to go on tour with his band. During the two weeks I was with them my favorite show was in Reno, NV when we opened for D'amore and Towers. I had no idea who D'amore and Towers were at the time but I knew by the end of the night I would continue listening to these bands. Five years later, Towers were back again on the West Coast doing a tour with Dogs of Ire in support of their split. Has anyone tried collecting the Towers discography? Its fuckin' impossible. ANYWAY, Towers are often described as a 'psychedelic nightmare' and on their myspace under 'sounds like' is a picture of a modern day city in ruins. Both the phrase and the image fit this band perfectly.

Lastly, Dogs of Ire took the floor and created a plate tectonic disrupt. The first time I saw them the power went out a few times during their first song so when the lights went out at the last note of their first song due to their Earth shaking riffs, it was no surprise. The night continued in darkness with endless crowd surfing, shirtless dudes and smiles. Get a copy of the split they just did with Towers, its awesome.

Once again thanks to everyone who came out, all the bands who were on tour that gave Fort Rodolfo a chance and again to my neighbors for being solid and telling me 'the bands sound great, the vocals however would be better if they didnt scream so much' and for donating cans of food for Santa Ana Food Not Bombs.

Fort Rodolfo: Not Small Enough. Show I.

Oh man, so on Friday we had the best show yet. After a few changes the final line-up for night was: Brahmans, Wilderness, Joyce Manor, Big Kids and lastly 1994!

Brahamans came through and delivered us their first presentation in front of a live audience. It was pretty tite. Brahmans this night was Shane and Julian, they reminded me of a young Upsilon Acrux or Planets, their set was fast, distorted and no vocals. With a little more practice this band can really bring on the maximum shred. I really hope this band records soon.

After Brahmans, Wilderness graced the floor with their wild-style of punk, dance, riot grrrl hits laced with sweet riffs and sassy vocals. Wilderness is Laura, Andy, Danny and Andre from West Covina. They played a handful of songs and showered us with silly string. Please check em' out, theyre one of my current favorite local bands and their next show is their CD release show so go!

Third up was Joyce Manor, theyre sweet dudes from Long Beach and can really play some good pop punk to drink to. What other redeeming qualities do they have? Well, they're putting out a 7" split w/Summer Vacation, just got signed to 6131 and also have an affinity for The Smiths.

Now consisting of two members of Spires, Big Kids was originally Jason(Spires) on guitar and Al Paca on drums and shortly Chris(Spires) also joined for second guitar. Well, on this night Jon from Ed Hoculi took part in this rock n' roll entity too by playing bass. Pop punk with heavy riffs \m/

1994! need no introduction but I'll give you one anyway. If you know me, I've talked my ass off about this band. This is the band Omar, Eric and I took 12 days off from 'life' to follow up and down the West Coast on their tour w/Spires last year. Then a month later flew out to the East Coast(best week of my life, read my earlier posts if you care or have the time) to see them a couple more times as well as going to other shows and Be Happy Fest in Philly. Finally my beloved tios were back and playing their first show of the tour at Fort Rodolfo. 1994! is Chris(guitar) and Mike(drums). Theyre often compared to Tiny Hawks because theyre a two piece that carry the melodic and abrasive qualities as well. With that said, just listen to them. While youre at it, listen to Boyfriends which is basically 1994! plus two dudes with all four playing slower and cuter.

 Anyway, after the show we all partied, went out and got vegan fish tacos and a handful of us stayed up til sunrise. Once I woke up I made vegan pancakes for everyone with blueberries and strawberries for toppings. Apparently, some neighbor from another street called the cops but they didnt show up til' about two hours after the show. Pfffft, way to go. I want to apologize for the quality of these photos, Im not used to taking pictures with a digital camera.

Hey kids, my good friend Jason set up this really amazing fest called ALL DAY FUN DAY! The line-up is pretty solid. The flyer is pretty self explanatory except it doesnt mention how much it is to get in. Im thinking its $10. Im not too sure but I'd go regardless if I didnt live so far and without any real means of getting there. By all means go if you are in the area!

There you go, these are the shows for the summer. Canned food is optional, not mandatory. However, every can that is collected is going to Santa Ana Food Not Bombs. As I've said before, I'd like to thank my neighbors who put up with our shinanigans. With that said, Im going to revise the rules at Fort Rodolfo.
- Respect our neighbors and their property, if it wasn't for them I wouldnt be able to host these shows.
- Shows start on time and must end at 10pm
- as you can see, alot of these bands are coming far from home. Therefor, please pay the full price. Rest assured, shows are no more than $5. Exact change is advised. Canned food is optional.
- No smoking in the garage.
- Refrigerator is off limits, this has been a problem before. If you dont live at the Fort, you have no business in the fridge.
- Show respect to your show attending comrades and hosts.
- No drama.

People Stuff, Pt. IV

- This is our last full day in Philly, when we woke up Maddie took us to the zoo to fly in the hot air balloon. Unfortunately the weather was 'hazardous' so we didnt get to go up :/

- Maddie then dropped us off at a record store, I dont remember what I found their this round other than Melt Banana, Mclusky and You and I CDs.

- Once we were done, we went to some other record store. Let me start by saying this, GOLDMINE. About a hundred dollars later I walked out with original pressings of  Clikitat Ikatowi's River of Souls, Ordination of Aaron's Immersion in a 90 mph world, Food Not Bombs Comp(feat: Swing Kids and Indian Summer), Ringfinger's Decimal, Antioch Arrow's The Lady is the cat and In love with jets, I Can't Live Without It comp (feat: Botch, Guyver-One and In/Humanity) LPS, a Kodan Armada/Whats yr damage split 7" and a Inhumanity 7"

- Damn, I'm trying to remember what we did afterwards... I dunno but we went to Brooklyn, New York to see Hop Along.

- So Francis was playing as a full band again, I guess she does that now and did a back to back set with Nether Friends. I dont remember them too much but they played pretty well. Anyway, Francis played and dedicated a song to us then finished her set with Beyonce's Single Ladies(Put a ring on it)

- After the show we made it just in time to buy a pastry from Food Swings(awesome NY vegan goodness) and bring some back for Francis and Mark.

- We went to a White Castle, I gave into temptation because we dont have those in CA. Then we got pizza for the last time. At this particular pizza parlor, there was a dude who had the Edward Rob Pattinson 'look.' Anyway, Edward was way out of his element(or too belligerently in his element?) stooping over the counter and running around in the kitchen getting  yelled at. Oh Edward.

- The ride home back to Philly did not lack the much needed 90s hits.

This is the day no one wanted to come.  Maddie took us to an Ethiopian restaurant and at this point Im broke as a joke so I get mango juice. We went to the airport and did our routine good-byes. About 6 hrs later, I was on the exact opposite coast. The night before we were at the foot of the Atlantic and now I was sleeping by the Pacific.

Thank you Omar for taking me to the East Coast and fronting the money for the plane ticket I still owe you for. Maddie for being the sweetest of all hearts mainly because Eva is an adorable dog and for letting us stay at your place, drink your booze and drive us around. All the following bands for either housing us, driving us around, playing a show we went to, partying in your house and with us, drink your booze and for being a band: 1994!, Boyfriends, MALEGOAT, Algernon Cadwallader, Hop Along, Spires, Elder, Teenage Cool Kids, Daniel Striped Tiger, Apeshit! and Ed Hoculi.

To all the new people I met along the way whether in a fleeting moment or in a drunken haze or both, I hope we stay friends/keep in touch. In order of appearance.
